Top 10 Fashion Trends for Back-to-School
From attending preschool for the first time to graduating college, planning/buying your first day of school outfit is stressful. And I must say, you can compare it to celebrities attending a red carpet event. Celeb photos will forever be judged on social media, magazines, and reality television. And don’t forget, your outfits during the first week of school will be judged. It’s all about the first impression. So, be ready! Start a new semester/quarter looking FAB at your desk. Your teacher better give you a FABULOUS A on your report card.
Choosing outfits may seem as easy as it sounds, but imagine all the terrible situations you can encounter on your first day of school. From forgetting the time slot for a college lecture to tripping in heels on uneven pavement to creasing Jordan shoes, it’s nearly impossible to stay in composure with a perfect outfit. I graduated from college three years ago, and I still have vivid memories of statement pieces I should have never worn.
I represented the Charlotte Hornets (purple/teal) and I don’t even like the team, wearing kids’ size Jordan shoes that kept my feet in pain for days, fitted shirts/tanks that showed my beer belly and layered fake gold accessories (necklaces/rings). Let’s say college reminds me of high school in that you need to find your individuality as a person. I wish I could go back in time to change these terrible fashion choices. Maybe if I picked a different style, I could possibly be in a long-term relationship or have become a social media influencer. Oh well! It is what it is!
Here is your ultimate fashion guide for #Backtochool with the top 10 looks to adopt!
Outfits:
1. Slips and Sneakers
Ok, for some, wearing a satin slip to the first day of school might be awkward because older folks know this fashion trend as an undergarment. But social media influencers are making this trend hip/stylish by wearing it with a plain T-shirt, cropped jacket, and running shoes! Just don’t wear this outfit in cold temperatures!
2. Plaid Blazers
Blazers are a genderfluid piece! Pair it with a bodysuit or graphic tee, distressed high-waisted jeans and chunky heels. You know I am bad and boogie!
3. Old-School Prep
From the films “Clueless” and “The Harry Potter Series” Catholic schoolgirl uniforms are in style. Just wear a plaid skirt or pants with a graphic sweatshirt or wool sweater. You know some boys in private schools in your neighborhood will wonder what school you’re attending.
4. School Boy Grunge
Paper bag pants and Cargo pants are in! The trick is to wear them high-waisted for two reasons: hiding your stomach insecurities and wearing graphic tees.
Print and Textiles:
5. Bold Animal Print
Cheetah/Leopard print has been trending since last year’s fall/winter seasons! If you don’t have any leopard/cheetah in your closet, you are missing out! From boots, belts, dresses, pants, and clutch bags, of course, finding your inner Cheetah Girl will be a piece of cake! Maybe Chanel, Dorinda, Galleria, or Aquanetta will let you be a backup vocalist/dancer.
6. Plaid
OMG plaid is back! From pants, overall dresses, blazers, skirts, long-sleeve shirts, pullover sweaters, there are plenty of colors to choose from! Don’t forget plaid looks good on everyone — even kids and older folks can pull it off!
7. Floral Print
Tropical print finally is not trending anymore! But floral print is making an appearance in school campuses this year. It is time to layer your favorite sundress with a t-shirt and sneakers. And I must say you are going to be Instagram-ready!
Accessories
8. Boots
It is about to be boot season all over again! And I know most of us are already preparing to spend a lot on boots this upcoming Fall/Winter. From calf-hugging, punk platforms, rain boots, winter wedges, buckles and more, there are so many types of boots for different outfits. Just make sure they are comfortable to walk in on uneven pavement. Most of us do not want you to be a fool on the first day of school.
9. Backpacks and Totes
Backpacks are always going to be a fashion trend for all grade levels! From television characters to full solid colors, you are definitely able to express your personality. College students too! Just don’t burden yourself with the weight. Another fall fashion trend for college students is large tote bags. They are made in different materials. In some cities, they are known as reusable bags. Some cities use them because of the ban on plastic bags. A lot of stores give a discount for having one while checking out at the cashier, too.
10. Newsboy Caps, Berets, and Beanies
On the first day of school, your hair gotta be on fleek. You cannot attend class having a bad hair day. A Newsboy cap, beret, or beanie will do the trick. Just remember, this accessory will bring the outfit together.
