If you’re moving into a new place, it’s hard to make a list of every little thing you’re going to need. Stocking up on canned food, toilet paper, and toothpaste takes planning ahead. Some of your first things you’ll think of will be where you’ll sleep — you’ll make sure you have sheets and pillows and a bath towel. But there will be some things you’ll forget because you didn’t expect to need them. So to save you from having to run to the store mid-decoration, here are seven unexpected things you’ll need in your home:

1. Cleaning supplies

It’s hard to remember all the things you’re going to need, until your dog knocks over their recently refilled water bowl onto the hardwood floor and you’re scrambling to find towels to mop it up, but you can’t find any, so you end up using the same kinds of towels you use after showering… and now you’re a bit grossed out.

Whether you’re moving into a new home, you’re moving into your first apartment, or you’ve recently gotten married and you’re combining yourselves into one home, if there’s one thing you can never have enough of: it’s cleaning supplies.

Broom and dustpan, cleaning wipes, paper towels, stain-removal spray… the list could go on and on. Even if you’re a rather dirty person, it’s important that you have more than enough supplies to clean with.

Invest in a good vacuum. That might be something you didn’t expect to use very often, but you will. And you’ll be frustrated if the vacuum you have sucks and barely picks up anything.

2. Extension cords

Without knowing where your outlets are going to be, you’ll probably want to invest in some extension cords before you get started with decorating. Nothing is worse than coming up with the perfect set-up and then not being able to turn on your bedside lamp because the outlet is too far away.

It’s annoying to have to take a trip to the store when you’re on a decorating roll, so before you get started, make sure you have some extension cords and power strips.

3. Command strips

Nailing pictures on the wall isn’t always ideal — especially when you know you’ll have to fill them all in eventually. Before you get started hanging up your wall decor, load up on command strips. You might think they’re a bit pricey, but they’re totally worth it. Save yourself from having to fill in nail holes and repaint later on — use command strips to hang your decor.

There are several different kinds of command strips — including clear, white, large, and small hooks for hanging. My advice? Stock up on all kinds — that way you’re prepared for any kind of decorating you want to do.

4. Scented candles/wax warmer

As much as our environment affects us, scent is one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle. Walking into a place that smells like mold/mildew/animals/stuffy, etc. is disgusting. You’ll have no friends if you don’t take care of making sure your house doesn’t smell like a total pigsty. If you don’t want to keep an open flame (which is understandable), look into a wax warmer. You can keep these in rooms around your new place and you’ll be sure to cover up the smell of your new cat.

5. Condiments

When you move into a new place, it’s likely that you’ll know you need to stock up on canned food, frozen chicken nuggets, and oatmeal. But what you might not remember to stock up on: condiments.

You’ll pull out your frozen chicken nuggets and you won’t have any ketchup. Your heart will be crushed.

Don’t forget to grab salad dressing, salt and pepper, and all the spices you’ll need for cooking as well.

6. First aid kit.

It’s probably not a good idea to wait until you’re in a crisis to make sure you have the basic first aid supplies you need. If you prepare for an emergency ahead of time, you’ll be well-prepared.

Keep a first aid kit of band-aids, antibiotic ointment, and gauze for those times you’ll need to handle an emergency with poise.

7. Extra toilet paper, paper towels, etc.

It’s such a pain when you run out of the essentials — so I suggest buying the things you need in bulk. You’ll never stop needing paper towels and toilet paper. You’ll never decide you don’t need trash bags. If you go ahead and stock up on these things, when you unexpectedly run out, you’ll have a backup plan.

No one likes running to the store one thousand times when moving into a new place. It’s a pain in the butt to keep running to pick up things you’ve forgotten. So if you’re moving into a new place, you can prepare for needing these seven unexpected things by making sure you have them in advance.
