Appropriate Thanksgiving Ensembles For Any And All Gatherings

By Amanda Cohen on November 22, 2015

Despite the fact that our malls are decked out in Christmas and Chanukah gear and Starbucks has switched to their red cups, the next holiday approaching is Thanksgiving!

While some families choose to have a more low-key holiday celebration with just a few close family and friends, others prefer to celebrate with all of their loved ones. Now, deciding what to wear on any old day is hard enough, but it becomes even harder when you have to choose the outfit that all of your family and friends will see you in since you have left for college.

In order to make everyone’s lives easier, I have a few fashion tips on how to deck yourself out in a trendy, but appropriate, Thanksgiving ensemble.

Loose skirt, nice blouse, tights, and booties

If you’re like me, sometimes wearing tight pants is not an option when you are about to indulge in a huge Thanksgiving feast. In order to have sufficient room for that pumpkin pie, a loose skirt with a nice blouse is a great outfit option for you.

The best part about this ensemble is that it can be dressed up or dressed down, depending on the type of gathering you are about to attend. One of my all-time favorite looks is a loose, black, leather skirt, a sheer blouse, grey tights, and black booties. This look is elegant, comfortable, trendy, and perfect for the frigid fall weather.

Another great look of this sort is a chiffon, burgundy skirt, grey or black tights, a dark-colored blouse, and burgundy or black booties. I know this outfit may sound overly-specific, but the emphasis on the burgundy helps your ensemble appear seasonally-appropriate. Chiffon is classy and comfortable, which, like the leather, can be casual or fancy.

Since your skirt is silkier in this outfit, I recommend maybe wearing a tighter top that shows off the shoulder. If you feel that you need to cover your arms, add a fur vest or a leather jacket to this outfit! The booties can either be chunky or more sleek and stiletto-like. I personally can’t walk in heels, so the chunkier version of booties would be my choice just so I can make my way down the Thanksgiving buffet with ease.

(Full or partially) leather pants, nice blouse, and booties

Since Thanksgiving falls on the brink of winter weather, many people prefer to wear pants to their Thanksgiving dinners. If your family proposes a nicer dress-code, you can still wear pants without having to wear leggings or jeans. If you haven’t already been able to figure it out, I love leather. A great way to wear pants that aren’t too casual is to wear full leather or partially leather pants.

My favorite pair of pants hanging in my closet have leather-lined sides. Even though the pants are tight, the material doesn’t cling too much to the skin like yoga pants would. I like to pair these pants with a light pink or cream blouse. Since the pants are tight around the ankles, I recommend wearing stiletto-like booties (meaning they have a thinner heel) that are black and suede.

If you absolutely love leather, you can go for waxed pants or full leather pants. I found an olive-colored pair of leather pants for $40.00 one time, which is a steal for pants (let alone leather pants). The olive-color goes great with a sheer black top and a grey fur vest.

If you opt out of the vest, a cool way to finish off this look is to wear the infamous sneaker-heels. This trendy footwear will give you a height boost and they are cute, comfortable and perfect for the fall. Wearing regular running shoes is not appropriate for Thanksgiving, but you can still run to the turkey in these heeled accessories!

Parachute pants, fitted top, leather jacket, and heels or booties

Parachute pants … not only is the name fun, but they are high fashion, comfortable, and loose (something that I always look for when choosing a Turkey Day outfit). These fun, flowy, and flirty pants are usually made of silky material that, when the light hits the material just right, glow and shine.

Since these pants are on the looser side, I like to pair them with a more fitted top. Now, this top does not have to resemble a cami from Abercrombie and Fitch, but it should hug the hips a little more than your average kaftan. A fun color scheme for this outfit is light brown/beige pants, a cream leather top or a cropped cream sweater, and a black or grey pair of low-rise heels or booties.

Once again, if you don’t want to show off your shoulder, add a leather jacket on top of your top!

Another fun way to wear parachute pants is to wear the leather parachute pants; yes, I did say leather and I am very excited about it. Black leather parachute pants do exist (thank goodness for fashion designers all over the world). Now don’t worry everyone, I am not going to suggest wearing leather pants with a leather top and leather jacket. However, I will suggest wearing these pants high-rise to your waist and pairing them with a cream-colored, textured, cropped sweater.

Jeans, sweater, and boots

Nothing screams fall like a big, comfy sweater, jeans, and boots. When, I say “big sweater,” I am not talking about the sweatshirts that I buy at the M-Den in an XL that my mom hates because they fit like a bag. No, I am talking about a wool sweater that is a little chunkier than most blouses.

A poncho-style sweater is a perfect example of this type of sweater, as it is comfortable, stylish, warm, and a little on the larger side. Another cute variation on this look that I have seen in many stores is the lace-trimmed sweaters and flannels. Flannels might be a little too casual for Thanksgiving dinner, but the sweaters, with the addition of the lace, is the perfect mix of casual and big event attire.

The jeans and boots are extremely important in this outfit. Since the ensemble is overall very casual, it is important that each piece of the puzzle makes a statement and stands out. I am a huge fan of jeans with the larger pockets lining the upper thigh-area of the pants. In addition, the motorcycle-style jeans with the ribbed thighs and/or calves take your jeans to the next level.

When choosing your boots, I recommend wearing low-rise boots with jeans that have a little more going on and high-rise boots with just plain jeans. Studded boots are always fun, but also cowboy-style boots stick with the autumn weather and add a trendier aspect to a casual outfit.

These outfits are not set in stone; you can easily mix and match items from each of these looks in order to suit your own personal style. No matter what you decide to wear, you will have an amazing day because you will be with your family and friends. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
