Ted Cruz: From Enmity To Amity

By John Wong on March 23, 2015

Prepared to announce that he will be pursuing the Republican nomination for President, Texas Senator Ted Cruz is preparing himself to become the conservative voice in the upcoming election.

Known for filibustering and fighting most of President Obama’s proposed legislation, Cruz must prepare for a hard line of critics who will try to discredit him as a candidate. In order to be elected to the presidency, Senator Cruz must ask himself whether or not he can be the uniting voice that congress needs.

Since the end of President George W. Bush’s second term, the political scenes in Washington and around the country have become breeding grounds for partisan squabbling. Indeed, congress continues to show how ineffective it is at creating legislation that is not stamped with a veto.

Likewise, the current president seems so embattled with his opposing party that he is dead set on dimming out ideas Republicans have for the nation. Senator Cruz was, for a time, the face of this movement. Joining with Senator Rand Paul, the two filibustered the president and brought attention to the issue of increased federal surveillance on American citizens.

However, unlike Senator Cruz, Rand Paul has matched his criticism of the president with equal effort to work alongside Democratic Senators, such as Corey Booker, and pursuing non-partisan reform movements. Currently, Ted Cruz is not known for much beyond his sheer enmity for President Obama.

While President Obama campaigned for change, voters did realize he meant changing the amount of dialogue between parties to zero. The President will be remembered for many accomplishments, but he will also be remembered for letting the partisan bickering of Republicans and Democrats fester.

Ted Cruz must rise above that memory in history if he wishes to work in the nation’s highest office. While he wishes to be the voice of conservatives, he must realize that not all issues are to be seen in red and blue. Working with Democrats will give him the credibility he needs to run for president.

Ted Cruz’s struggle with being viewed as the President’s enemy, rather than a critical partner, has scarred him as he prepares to campaign. If he can learn to work with those he considers his enemies, he will earn the respect from both the left and the right.

While many Americans may believe this election is the time to finally elect a female president, she may just have to compete with the first Latin-American as well.
